Our Church

Covenant of 1773

We profess ourselves the disciples of Jesus Christ, whom we believe is the true and promised Messiah, and we believe that the sacred Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the word of God, and that they open and show the way to eternal life, and that if attended to and accompanied with the divine spirit, are able to make us wise to salvation.

Open and Affirming

The Open and Affirming ministry of the United Church of Christ began in 1985 through an action of our General Synod. At that synod, delegates voted to encourage local churches and other United Church of Christ ministries to develop welcoming statements that would include people of all sexual orientations, gender identies and expressions. As the movement has moved through our denomination to state conferences, local associations, local churches, campus ministries and other ministries within our denominations, we have widened welcoming statement to include people with other statuses and backgrounds. This is in keeping with the denomination's proclamation that wherever you are on life's journey, you are welcome here.

The First Congregational Church of Wiscasset adopted the Open and Affirming statement at its annual meeting on January 27, 2013.

This statement was accepted:

"The members of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset United Church of Christ are committed to the spirit of Jesus’ commandment to love God and your neighbor as yourself. We embrace diversity and affirm the dignity and worth of every person. We welcome all people of every age, race, gender, ethnicity, faith background, marital status and family structure, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, mental and physical ability, economic & social status, educational background, and any other label that may divide rather than unite us.  We ask all to join in our common purpose to live according to the example of Jesus the Christ. We honor human relationships based on love, responsibility, respect, and trust. As we grow together in faith and love, we are secure in the knowledge that God’s love is for everyone and we invite all persons to participate in our church’s ministries."

Communion

We offer Communion generally on the first Sunday of each month. Communion is open to all. You do not need to be a member.

Our church is also the center of community activities

Every winter, we serve cocoa and cookies at the lighting of the Christmas tree on the Town Green. Our doors are open to community and municipal groups. The Sheepscot Chorus rehearses here, and the Wiscasset Garden Club meets here. We also provide space for WIC and OEA.
